The Film “Not Who We Are” portrays the lives of five Syrian women with a different sociocultural background. As refugees in Lebanon, they are fighting against the brutality of their daily lives, and try to rebuild their existence that has been destryed b the war. In the film they allow us to gain an insight into their daily distress, but also into their strengths, resilience and survival instinct.
Since the beginning of 2013, Syrians have become the fourth largest group of refugees in the world, over a million of them have fled to Lebanon, 80 percent of which are women and children. The documentary ‘Not Who We Are’ gives an insight into the hardship of women who have fled the war in Syria to Lebanon.
The story of the five courageous characters (Afra’a, Umm Omar, Umm Raed, Samar, and Siham) show how the ‘refugee experience’ affects the lives of women. In the course of filming the documentary, the women gained trust to the filmmakers, and began to freely speak about their former lives in Syria, their distress, and very freely also about sexual issues, and revealed their fears and hopes for the future.
We are looking forward to seeing you there and to a lively discussion with director Carol Mansour ! After the official part, the cinema’s lounge is ours for drinks and private discussions.
