Call for Nomination

The Ibn Rushd Prize 2013 is calling for a singer, songwriter, or band whose songs deal with the quest for freedom, civil rights, and democracy, and call for implementing these.

Freedom and democracy, the right for a life of dignity and security – these are values an increasing number of states, also in the Arab World, outwardly espouse. All too often, however, these are false and hollow phrases intended mask the deplorable conditions that actually exist.

To lay bare this state of affairs, words are needed: words that make thoughts tangible, criticism clear, and the need for change utterable. Theoretic, critical or literary texts, however, only reach a small part of the people; to bring about change, the awareness of people from all social classes needs to be raised, and the majority need to put their hearts into democratic change. Music links content to emotion, moves people, expresses new ideas filled with lightness, filled with power. It is from the lightness of words turned to melody that the power can arise and this power is indispensable for change. A song conveys criticism, ideas and emotions, and reaches people of all parts of society.

The Ibn Rushd Prize 2013 thus calls for a
a singer, songwriter or band
who poetically condenses the critical or creative thinking that is indispensable for change within society, and whose song texts deal with the quest for freedom, civil rights, and democracy, and call for implementing these changes.
