Frankfurt, March 2003
Since creative writing from the Southern Hemisphere continues to be sidelined on the literary markets in Europe, the Society for the Promotion of African, Asian and Latin American literature (a non-profit and non-commercial literary agency closely connected with the Frankfurt Book Fair) has developed a programme of translation grants for important fiction books by authors of the Southern Hemisphere.
The programme is being funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the German government and the Swiss cultural foundation PRO HELVETIA.
Since 1984 the German translations of about 400 books (novels, short stories and poetry) have been supported, 95 of them by authors from the Arab region. Among these are 58 translations from Arabic.
The programme is working on the basis of applications by German and Swiss publishers (and not authors or translators); hence, there are also books by Arab authors available in translation on the German market which have not been supported by this programme.
Subsidies are granted by an independent jury.
For more information see the society’s website www.litprom.de.
